Transfer Case Grinding
1122016 Grinding noises coming from underneath the vehicle When the output shaft seal breaks or wears out it also can cause noises to appear from under the vehicle.
Transfer case grinding. First I thought it was coming from the driveshaft or the frontrear diff but wasnt sure. 12222020 One of the most common transfer case problems in older GM trucks built between the years 1988 and 2000 is they tend to produce a transfer case grinding noise at some point in their functional lives. Step 1 Engage the parking brake and turn the vehicle off before inspecting the undercarriage. I then STOPPED the truck put it in Neutral engaged the 4HI and took offno problems. 1112010 Also when I shift the truck into 4HI the transfer case made this awful grinding noise until the gears matched up.
5172018 Noisy When Transfer Case Engaged Often our ears are the sense that helps us diagnose signs of any vehicular problem. 8252017 sounds like the clip on the rear output shaft its probably broke. I did this again going down the road at a tad higher speed and then once at like 5 MPH and it did it all 3 times.
First I thought it was coming from the driveshaft or the frontrear diff but wasnt sure. I put the truck on jack stands and put the truck into gear and determined it was definitely the transfer case. If so pull it all the way to the rear and you should see a groove at the front part of the shaft where the clip goes.
Another reason for difficult shifting and grinding in 4WD is low oil levels in your transfer case. Its important to address fluid leaks immediately or else the cars engine may experience internal transfer case damage. When a seal becomes damaged these sounds often escape out manifesting as an unusual grinding from underneath your vehicle.
Lets check the list. You may hear one or more odd sounds coming from the transfer case or from under your vehicle. 10172011 Now IF you are shifting the transfer case while the transmission is in GEAR that makes it grind because your engine is still trying to drive the input shaft to the transfer case and you are shoving it in gear.
